Genealogical material of the Banta Family, Correspondence concerning the compilation of this collection by Banta's sister, Mable Banta Beeson, his soon George and his grandson Mark, and family pictures. Correspondence from Samuel Richards, J.K. Demarest, Theodore M. Banta and Christopher Harrison, first Lt. Governor of Indiana. Journals and photographs of hunting and fishing trips to Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota in the 1870's and 80's and articles written from these journals. Stories of pioneer life in Indiana using Johnson county as a background. Colored photographs of a display of this material in the Franklin College Library in 1971 are included.

David Demaree Banta was born on May 23, 1833 and died on April 9, 1896. He received two degrees from Indiana University, BS in 1855 and an LLB in 1857. Banta received a LLD from Franklin College in 1888. Banta married Melissa Elizabeth Riddle Perrin on June 16, 1856, and the couple had three children. In 1857 he began practicing law in Franklin, Indiana.
